How potjie sizes work
Potjie numbers aren't litres. They're an old sizing system, and capacities vary between makers: one brand's No. 3 holds about 8 litres, while Megamaster's No. 3 Pro holds 10.8 litres. Our chart uses typical capacities, so check the label on the pot you're buying.
| Potjie | About | Feeds (generous portions) |
|---|---|---|
| No. 1 | 2,5 litres | 2 people |
| No. 2 | 5,5 litres | 5 people |
| No. 3 | 8 litres | 8 people |
| No. 4 | 10 litres | 10 people |
| No. 6 | 14 litres | 14 people |
| No. 10 | 25 litres | 26 people |
We size generously, because at most South African potjies the pot is the main event. We allow about 0.75 litres of finished potjie per person and fill the pot to no more than about 80%, which leaves room for the lid and for the steam to circulate.
